Thanagar is a dead planet that was once the home of the Thanagarians, an angel-like, winged avian humanoid race of warriors who were skilled in aerial combat. The planet is shown to have large continental landmasses and islands surrounded by an ocean. Surrounding it in orbit are asteroids made of ice and frozen hydrogen gas, making it difficult for ships to approach it and lock into an orbit.
Biography[]
The homeworld of the Thanagarians, Thanagar was visited by Kara Zor-El in her quest to find new worlds for the New Kryptonian Empire, taking trinkets of her time there, and thinking it was a world worthy of joining the New Empire. Unbeknownst to her, Brainiac's New Empire was a genocidal state. Finding Thanagar weak, Brainiac ordered Kara to destroy the planet. Using her heat vision, augmented by her battle suit, to incinerate the planet and level all its cities. Based on the screams in her flashbacks, countless Thanagarians perished in the onslaught, and it is currently unclear if any survivors exist. By the time Kara finished her task, the land was scorched and barren and the blue ocean water was dirty from the ash contaminating it, with only a mural left to mark the attack.
When trying to convince her cousin to join the New Kryptonian Empire, Kara brought him to Thangar, expecting to find a paradise. As the two explored the ruins, Brainiac's drones arrived to collect them. While testing Clark's abilities, Brainiac used a simulacrum of a Thanagarian, allowing him to deduce that Brainiac was responsible for Thanagar's demise. When Kara sought to break her brainwashing, she returned to Thanagar and managed to break through her conditioning, allowing her to remember her genocide order. Distraught and traumatized, she left the planet.[1]
