Task Force X is a government agency supervised by Checkmate. The agency was created after the event known as Zero Day, dedicated to protecting the Earth from any future extraterrestrial threats.
The group uses superpowered criminals and military agents as field operatives. Their main goal is to take down Superman and those who are of his species, as they see them as the enemy.
History[]
Following Zero Day, a seeming invasion of Earth led by Nemesis Omega, Sam Lane and Amanda Waller were given the green light to form Task Force X by the US government. With Sam's leadership, the organization was created with the intent to prepare for any extraterrestrial threat and protect Earth from it. To this end, Task Force X began to experiment with the remaining Kryptonian technology salvaged from Zero Day in hopes of creating super soldiers that could stand up against Kryptonians.[1]Cadmus was also given discarded Kryptonian technology but once it became apparent that they were against creating weapons, Task Force X was sent in to destroy them, the assault leaving only the Brain and Monsieur Mallah as survivors.[2] The group eventually created a base underneath Stryker's Island Penitentiary.[3]
In 2023, some of Task Force X's Kryptonian technology was stolen by Leslie Willis and distributed to various gangs throughout Metropolis. As Task Force X began operations to retrieve the stolen tech, Superman made his debut.[4] His abilities led Task Force X's leadership to mistake him for Nemesis Omega, leading to them recruiting cybernetically augmented criminals and Metahumans.[1] Mist eventually led Superman into a trap,[5] allowing Task Force X to take him into custody. During his interrogation, Superman's horrified reaction to Zero Day led Sam Lane to question their actions and doubt that he was Nemesis Omega. Dissatisfied with Sam's lack of progress and doubts, Waller opened all the cells, Livewire taking the chance to supercharge Parasite to cover their escape. Parasite eventually managed to absorb enough energy to threaten all of Metropolis, forcing Superman to confront him in battle. Waller managed to pin the blame for all of this at Sam's feet, allowing her to be promoted to Task Force X's new leader.[1]
When Kal-El's Spacecraft emerged from beneath the Kent Farm on Thanksgiving, Sam Lane attempted to summon Task Force X to him only for Superman to end the threat.[6]
Around Christmas of 2023, Task Force X sought to take custody of Amazo from Team Seven.[7] When they later tracked the android to the ruins of Cadmus, they were chased off by Amazo and Superman.[8]
In the new year, Task Force X tracked Superman's spacecraft to Antartica, seeking to salvage its technology. After Superman managed to remove the Kryptonite from the power core, the AI copy of Jor-El teleported the ship away, leaving Task Force X behind as he did so.[9]
Waller later began kidnapping inmates and staff from Stryker's Island Penitentiary and experimenting on them with Kryptonian tech. However, the base and organization were compromised when Sam and the prisoners were rescued by Superman. Following the event, Parasite attempts to escape, only for his suit to be disabled by Lex Luthor, who Waller promoted to the new lead scientist.[3]
After Superman had been abducted by his cousin,[10] Task Force X placed Metropolis under martial law. Taking over Star Labs, Task Force X had a spaceship stolen out from under them by Superman's human allies.[11]
When the ship returned, Task Force X quickly shot it down, disabling Supergirl with a Red Sun Omega Field and Kryptonite, taking everyone into custody. As Jimmy Olsen had unintentionally live-streamed the arrest, a citizen's blockade barred them in the streets of Metropolis, before Kandor arrived. While Task Force X was quick to deploy its weapons, Brainiac quickly overpowered them, even hacking into their Metallos.[12]
With the army lost, Lex Luthor fled with Waller finding herself briefly drafted into Sam Lane's Cavalry. After Superman and Supergirl defeated Brainiac, Task Force X's illegal activities were exposed to the public and the group made defunct. While Waller disappeared, Luthor and Slade Wilson managed to retreat to LexCorp.[13]
