- Smallville was conceived by writers in 1949 to expand on the lore of Superman’s origins. It represented the ideal Middle American town of the mid 20th century, with American values and wholly filled with independent businesses that are family owned and not by large corporations. The townsfolk are good people but are against certain forms of progress, such as opening a shopping mall that would kill the business of the local stores.
