Trivia[]

  • Smallville was conceived by writers in 1945 to expand on the lore of Superman's origins before he moved to Metropolis. The town first appeared, unnamed, in More Fun Comics #101 and received its name in 1949's Superboy #2, with its formerly ambiguous location being identified as Kansas in 1978's Superman: The Movie. It represented the ideal Middle American town of the mid 20th century, with American values and wholly filled with independent businesses that are family owned and not by large corporations. The townsfolk are good people but are against certain forms of progress, such as opening a shopping mall that would kill the business of the local stores.
