Sam Lane, otherwise known as The General, was the main antagonist of Season 1 and a major character in Season 2 of My Adventures with Superman. He is the father of Lois Lane and works alongside Amanda Waller and Deathstroke as part of Task Force X.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Sam Lane enlisted in the United States military. It is here that he met and befriended Amanda Waller. At some point, Sam got married and had a daughter, Lois Lane.
Zero Day[]
Sam and Waller were among the soldiers stationed at a military encampment to survey a mysterious unidentified flying object of unknown origin. After 3 days of nothing happening, Sam grew homesick. During a debriefing, he would sneak into the command tent to call his family, promising he'd be home soon. Sam's absence was noticed by Waller who would find him in the command tent and admonish him for being so complacent during what was supposed to be a top-secret mission. As she drags him back to the briefing, the mysterious flying object fires a laser beam into the sky, opening up a portal with an armada of alien ships on the other side. The alien ships deploy an army of robotic infantry units to attack the soldiers on the ground. Waller, Lane engage the robots in a firefight. During the ensuing shootout, Waller is hit on the shoulder by a laser fired by a robot. The military brings in tanks to fight the robots, but they are quickly destroyed by a mysterious flying alien who wipes out a large group of military personnel with a single blast of red energy fired from its head. The invasion is quickly halted when the portal the aliens came through closes suddenly. The mysterious alien vanishes and all the robot infantry they sent shuts down. The flying object they were surveying then crashes onto the ground. Though Waller and Lane survived the ordeal, the memories of the incident would stay with them.

Personality[]
When he was younger, Sam was a loving father and husband, even breaking protocol to talk to his family on a communications channel. He was also a bit more aloof about his duties, as he didn’t see the point in observing a floating object (the warp gate) and ditched the briefing to make the call.
This changed when Zero Day happened, as Sam was traumatized seeing his brothers and sisters in arms getting obliterated by an unknown alien threat and almost dying himself if not for the collapse of the gate. From that day on, Sam became colder and more committed to his work as a soldier, becoming distant from his wife and daughter in order to defend Earth from another invasion. This ultimately led to Lois hating her father as he would not tell her that her mother was sick and dying.
His paranoid focus on stopping another invasion led him to misunderstand that Superman was somehow responsible for Zero Day and began to target him with the intent of apprehending him. Upon his interrogation, he found that Superman was traumatized by the torture he underwent and has no idea why Kryptonians would hurt humanity, crying in despair about what he perceived were his origins as a weapon.
Seeing this made Sam question his own judgement, even figuring out that Superman would have been too young to have been a part of Zero Day.
Despite being hardened by tragedy, Sam still has a moral code, as he will not put civilians in danger in his hunt for the alien threat or kill prisoners like Amanda. He also still loves his daughter, despite the rift between them and his dislike of her admiration for the Man of Steel. He reluctantly respected her wishes when he was told to leave Superman alone, lying to Amanda Waller about the status of Superman.
He becomes appalled by what Amanda has become when he discovers that she was experimenting on kidnapped civilians by augmenting them with Kryptonian tech and a bit disillusioned with his mission. He also expresses to Lois that he doesn’t approve of her relationship with Clark as he has the impression that he is unreliable and cannot keep his daughter safe with his random disappearances (unaware that Clark is Superman). This makes things very awkward for Clark when Sam is forced to go into hiding and stays at his apartment when Lois suggests it, with the latter making it very clear he does not like the situation or him. Making things worse is that Sam still harbors hatred for Superman and the latter has not forgiven him for torturing him or for treating Lois harshly.
Eventually during Brainiac’s invasion, Sam began to have a change of heart, enough to convince Steel, Livewire, Heatwave and Intergang to help Superman defend Earth from the Kryptonian AI. This showcased that he never lost sight of the greater good and put aside his previous grudge towards Superman. In the aftermath of Brainiac’s defeat, he joined the Kent’s farm with those acquainted with Clark, Lois and Jimmy showing his improving relations.
