Monsieur Mallah is a recurring character in My Adventures with Superman.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Circa 2001, Mallah was a gorilla in Cadmus' custody. Though Cadmus had been tasked by the United States of America to produce weapons, they used the technology they were given for humanitarian purposes. The scientist who would become the Brain performed an experiment on Mallah that gave him super-intelligence, the two eventually forming a romantic partnership. When the misuse of resources was discovered, Task Force X was sent to shut down Cadmus. Seeing a chance to escape, Mallah and Brain faked their own deaths by damaging their unstable black hole experiment, only for the singularity's expansion to kill everyone else and damage Brain's body. Mallah managed to salvage his lover's brain and implanted it a robotic body, the two rebuilding Cadmus as their private refuge. After a year, they grew bored and created an army of mutants. Over the years, they recreated the black hole, hoping to use it as a wormhole to escape into another reality where they would not be judged.[1]

Meeting Jimmy[]

When Jimmy Olsen stumbled upon Cadmus in 2023, Mallah abducted him, thinking he was a spy. Before Jimmy could be executed, he depressingly ranted about his supposed friends, Mallah offering a sympathetic ear which led to him befriending Jimmy and showing him their home. When Clark Kent and Lois Lane arrived, Mallah and Brain listened in on their argument with Jimmy remotely (despite saying they would give the three space), altering them to the fact that the 0MACs had reactivated, Mallah releasing their mutant army to fight the robots. When they were chased to the black hole, Mallah was inspired and reopened the black hole, allowing it to reach critical mass and stabilize into a wormhole. With the Red Sun Omega Field providing camouflage now disabled, Brain and Mallah left for another reality.[1] Unbeknownst to the two, their wormhole alerted Mr. Mxyzptlk to Earth-12's location, allowing him to escape from the League of Lois Lanes.[2]

For the next six months, Mallah and Brain explored the multiverse, finding that they had doppelgängers wherever they went. After defeating evil versions of themselves, and having created another unstable black hole, Mallah and Brain returned to Earth-12. Catching up with Jimmy, the two had brunch with him every weekend.[3]

Around Christmas, Jimmy brought Amazo's blueprints to Mallah and Brain, hoping they could build him a new body.[4]

Invasion of Metropolis[]

Following Superman being abducted by his cousin,[5] Jimmy called on Mallah and Brain to help stage a rescue mission, needing their expertise to crew a Star Labs spaceship, the two freely helping themselves to some of Livewire's technology and weapons. Though gaining access to the Star Labs building, the group was hampered by the upgraded cyber-security, alerting Amanda Waller. While Lois, Jimmy and Livewire went to secure the ship, Mallah and Brain stole the base's sample of Europium needed for the portal. Catching up with their friends at the ship, the four were beset by Metallos, managing to launch when Livewire's Gang had a change of heart. Though Mallah and Brain thought they had locked onto Superman's bio-signature,[3]they had actually locked onto Kara's, arriving in Thanagar space.[6]

Jimmy promptly invited Kara aboard, Mallah quickly making up an excuse to leave when he saw Jimmy and Kara's budding romance. When Kara brought a plan to rescue Clark, Mallah and Brain remained aboard the ship to enact repairs and modify it with what technology they could claim from Kandor. Having taken control of Superman's body, Brainiac ejected the organic intruders from the space station and warped to Earth. Mallah and Brain managed to rescue their friends only for Lois to subject herself to the Black Mercy.[7]

Managing to portal back to Metropolis ahead of Brainiac, the ship was quickly bisected by Task Force X. At Kara's urging, Mallah and Brain portalled away as she flew out to rescue Lois and Jimmy.[8]

After Brainiac's invasion had been repulsed, Mallah and Brain began rebuilding Cadmus, aided by Jimmy and Kara.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Monsieur Mallah was created by Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani, first appearing in Doom Patrol #86 in June 1964. He is an enhanced gorilla who is the partner and lover to the The Brain, a member of the Brotherhood of Evil and a frequent enemy of the Doom Patrol.
    • This version of the character is presented as more benign than most incarnations, as Mallah is usually more violent and antagonistic.
      • Though Mallah mentions meeting the other versions of himself and The Brain in Olsen's Eleven, who are just as violent and evil as the original DC Comic versions of the characters.
  • While Mallah wears glasses in My Adventures with Mad Science, his cameo in issue 6 and the flashbacks in Olsen's Eleven, he dispenses with them during the second season, suggesting he either had his vision corrected or wore his glasses purely for aesthetic purposes.
  • Mallah's backstory is based on his New 52 incarnation, being an ordinary gorilla who had his intellect enhanced by the scientist who would become the Brain.
