Metropolis is a city located in the United States of America on Earth. It is where the Daily Planet is based, at which Clark Kent works when he isn't the city's protector Superman.

- In the comics, the City of Metropolis is the City of Tomorrow, a well-known principal city in New York (sometimes Delaware). Superman protects the city as its "favorite son". In recent Rebirth iterations of comic lore, the city is said to have been founded by German and Nordic immigrants.
- According to Joe Shuster, he was inspired by 1930s Toronto as the model for Metropolis, especially the Daily Planet building which was modeled after his old workplace, The Old Toronto Star building. Later writers would model the city to be an analogue for New York City or be a city in proximity to the Big Apple, though there would be deviations such as the the “Brainiac 13 era” in the 2000s comics when a future version of the villain left behind nanotechnology that drastically altered Metropolis into a true city of the future with advanced computers and flying cars.
