Kryptonians are a technologically advanced alien species that once inhabited the now-destroyed planet of Krypton. The Kryptonian race are externally identical to humans, but are genetically of a far more advanced biology, allowing them to draw immense powers from the radiation emitted by yellow suns.
The namesake rulers of the Kryptonian Empire, sought to expand their territories through brutal expansionism. However, over the course of their history, the Kryptonian people eventually moved away from their violent beginnings in favor of genuinely uplifting other worlds with the resources and technology they had, as opposed to one-sidedly subjugating them, and eventually abandoning any aspects of imperialism entirely.
During a war with an enemy more powerful than even them, the Kryptonians had attempted to resolve the ongoing conflict peacefully. The species is near-extinct after their planet was destroyed by their Brainiac system for going against the old militaristic values they made generations ago and viewed their kindness as a threat to its purpose as a program designed for war.
History[]
Based on Kara's description of the planet, in the beginning, the Kryptonian race once saw themselves as the greatest and most advanced society in the entire universe, so they began to dedicate themselves in advancing lesser worlds but through forceful conquest, believing that it was for the greater good of all.[1] During the early days of their imperial years, Kryptonian scientists began to study genetic engineering to make each new generation of their kind stronger than the previous one.[2]
However, in the centuries prior to their destruction, the Kryptonians had came to realize the immorality of imperialism and moved away from the old ways of their society, transition to a culture that uplifted member planets rather than enslave, abandoning imperialism entirely.[3]
Extinction[]
Several generations after their reformation, the Kryptonians went to war with a enemy that was too powerful for them to defeat on their own.[4] The Empire's scion, Jor-El, took it upon himself to engage in secret meetings with the enemy, working out on organizing a ceasefire.
Learning of these meetings and with fear of outright decommissioning if the war ended peacefully, an already disgusted Brainiac, the artificial intelligence that operated Krypton's entire neural network, planned to use their greatest weapon to cast Krypton itself into "Hell", as war is all that it was made for.
After learning what their own A.I system was planning to do, and already too late to evacuate the entire planet from the attack, the House of El sent their infant children Kal-El and Kara Zor-El away by two escape pods in hopes of preserving their lives from the cataclysm.[3]
Around this time, a rogue Kryptonian known only as Nemesis Omega attempted to invade a planet named Earth with an entire army of 0MACs on the event that would be known as Zero Day only for a flash of light on the invader's side of the warp gate to halt the invasion before it could truly begin.[5]
In 2024, Jor-El's AI duplicate considered, as well as Kara Zor-El herself and her cousin to be the only Kryptonians in existence.[4][6]
Technologies[]
- Kryptonian Energy Crystals: Kryptonians use crystal to power their technologies and weaponry. They can even be used to for someone to commune with Kryptonian tech telepathically.
- Black Mercy: Though never proven, Kryptonians use this special device to interact with whoever wears it and their memories. They can even alter the person's memories to their likings, even manipulate the people within them to act differently the consciousness enact transitions.
- Energy Weapons: The Kryptonian military had rifles and guns that could fire deadly energy blasts. These weapons would also be outfitted on their robotic attack drones and spaceships.
- Genetic Augmentation: Kryptonian scientists were said to have a better understanding of genetics than any other human scientist. Not only were they able to access it, but they could manipulate it to improve Kryptonian biology and medicine. According to Brainiac, the origins of their powers was stated to be the result of generations of genetic augmentation and enhancements, making each generation stronger then the last, and that, in the beginning, Kryptonians were no different to humans prior to such advancements.
- Kryptonian Armor: Kryptonians created their own high-tech armor as a means of surviving hazardous environments and enhancing their combative capabilities. The armor can be summoned with a Kryptonian bracelet either fully or partially, it also comes with special features such as physical enhancement, heat vision augmentation, voice changer, Brainiac System connection, crystalline containers and holographic screens. It is still unknown who created the armor in the first place.
- Super Suit: As showcased by Superman and Supergirl, some Kryptonians from ruling noble families possess their own form of armor, but with their house's symbol. They come with space helmets for surviving in the depths of space, though it seemed unnecessary due to their adaptability in the atmospheric void.
- Terraformation Androids: To aid in their colonization of other planets, the Kryptonians created these androids to reshape worlds in the likeness of Krypton, the androids being capable of drawing in foreign matter and energy and reshaping it to their needs. They also come with an array of advanced weaponry for offensive onslaughts.
- Advanced A.I. and Consciousness Transfer: As described by Brainiac, Kryptonians had the ability to preserve consciousness in a holographic form, the copies being just as sentient as the original beings.
- Brainiac System: It once served as the main artificial intelligence in control of all Kryptonian technology such as androids, cities and spaceships. After the destruction of Krypton, the A.I. program went rogue in its attempts to re-establish the former empire and conquering other planets in the universe.
- Eradicator Protocol: It is a special program that make a Kryptonian obey orders like the perfect soldier, despite good or bad intents. Its only known weakness is being hacked by foreign technology or the soldier being able to overcome it themselves. It is unknown who created it in the first place besides Brainiac.
- Interstellar Travel: Kryptonians had a wide array of technologies to traverse across space, including warships and interdimensional warp-gates that allowed them to jump from one location to another instantaneously.
Characteristics[]
Appearance-wise, Kryptonians are externally identical to humans. However, their unique physiology gives numerous abilities, as well as certain weaknesses, that humans do not have.
Powers[]
Kryptonian Physiology:
- Solar Energy Absorption: The cellular structures of a Kryptonian can allow them to absorb, store and metabolize the wavelength of yellow solar radiation in order to fuel their abilities. It has also been proven that this ability allows them to survive inside a sun and absorb massive amounts of solar energy to increase their powers tenfold.
- Superhuman Strength: Thanks to their biology, Kryptonians was given the ability to lift things that no human can lift without the use of machinery. It is undetermined how much an average Kryptonian can lift.
- Superhuman Speed: As they are strong and capable of withstanding virtually anything, Kryptonians also possess the ability to move at speeds faster than the Earth's fastest fighter jet. They can appear only as a blur to the naked eye.
- Superhuman Durability: Kryptonians possess immense physical durability. If a human were to punch a Kryptonian's body, they would injure themselves on impact while the Kryptonian would feel nothing.
- Superhuman Stamina: Kryptonians possess extraordinary superhuman stamina. Though Superman's battles have shown it is possible to tire them out, they also rapidly regenerate their stamina.
- Superhuman Hearing: Kryptonians possess extremely powerful hearing, being able to hear people and things from afar. With focus, they can isolate certain sounds.
- Flight: Kryptonians have the ability to levitate in the air and fly in any direction. They can even combine their flight with their superhuman speed to go anywhere much faster.
- Accelerated Healing: Under a yellow sun, a Kryptonian's cells can heal from injury at a faster rate than humans, though the speed at which they heal is dependent on the severity of the injury and how much solar energy they have absorbed or still have within their bodies.
- Superhuman Vision: Kryptonians can see further than average humans.
- Heat Vision: Kryptonians can emit beams of thermal energy from their eyes. They can even control the intensity and area effect of it.
- X-Ray Vision: Kryptonians possess the ability to see and peer through solid materials and structures. They can even focus it to observe hidden details or inner workings.
- Superhuman Breath: Kryptonians can generate overwhelming hurricane-force winds by exhaling air or inhaling large volumes of air or vapor. This was shown in "Adventures with My Girlfriend", and done by one of the evil Supermen in "Kiss Kiss Fall in Portal". They can also blow powerful gusts of winds at freezing temperatures, and when focused they can project it into a cold energy beam. So far, the only Kryptonian to have demonstrated this ability is Superman, with Brainiac's reaction suggest that this ability is uncommon among Kryptonians.
- Sonic Scream: Unbeknownst, some Kryptonians can generate powerful soundwaves from their mouths, which can be anguishing or devastating to their opponents. During Brainiac's invasion of Earth, Kara demonstrated this ability against Brainiac's drones.
- Vacuum Adaptation: As showcased by Kara, Kryptonians can survive unprotected in the vacuum of space for an indefinite amount of time.
- Bio-Electric Aura: Under different circumstances, Kryptonians can generate a bio-electric aura that protects them from attacks. The aura flares up when the latter's powers are activated, causing their eyes to glow and their bodies to spark and crackle. Only special cases have access to this unique ability, as such with Superman and Supergirl. This may stem from them being members of primuses, ruling families of Krypton.
- Electricity Reflection: When the aura is activated, Kryptonians can reflect electrical-based attacks. As Superman did against Livewire when she attacked him.
- Energy Containment: Kryptonians can expand their auras in order to contain powerful energy sources.
- Electromagnetic Pulse Emission: As Superman showcased, Kryptonians can use their bio-electric auras to perform emanation for offensive purposes, such as unleashing electromagnetic pulses to disrupt technology.
Weaknesses[]
- Kryptonite: A glowing green mineral. Exposure to even a small amount causes excruciating pain, devastating illness and can be potentially fatal to a Kryptonian. As was first shown when the League of Lois Lanes used Kryptonite in their weapons to eliminate Superman.
- Red Solar Radiation: Exposure to red sun radiation can drain Kryptonians of their powers, rendering them vulnerable as average humans. A secondary weakness of theirs next to Kryptonite.
- Power Absorption: As showcased by Superman's first battle against Parasite, Kryptonians are somewhat susceptible to those with power absorption capabilities.
- X-Ray Limit: As stated in "Adventures with My Girlfriend", Kryptonians cannot see through certain metals, such as lead.
- Limited Solar Energy: Like Superman proved in "Zero Day Part 1", Kryptonians need solar energy to fuel their biology, without it they become weak, and power limited.
- Auditory Sensitivity: Kryptonians have super hearing, meaning they have sensitive ears and hate loud noises.
- Brainwashing: Kara was under Brainiac's control since childhood and obeyed his every command. Meaning possibly all Kryptonians are susceptible to mind control.
Language[]
Kryptonians speak a foreign language unknown to humans, known as Kryptonese.

Trivia[]
- In the comics, Kryptonians are a humanoid species far more technologically and biologically advanced than the Humans of Earth. While they first appeared in Action Comics #1 with Superman's debut, it would not be until Superman #1 that Superman's home planet was identified as Krypton. In most continuities, the Kryptonians are a functionally extinct species following their planet's destruction, leaving only a small handful, most prominently Kal-El, as survivors, though other continuities have had enough of their number survive to rebuild their society.
- In contrast to the isolationist scientists of previous media, this show's incarnation of Kryptonians have a more militaristic expansionist mindset, but well on their way to becoming the usual peaceful incarnation which led to their downfall at the hands of Brainiac in fear of becoming obsolete. The DC Extended Universe had previously framed the Kryptonians as trying to build an interstellar dominion but their attempts to do so failed thousands of years before their planet's demise.
- The fact that Kryptonians are built, rather than being naturally born harkens to the species' depiction starting in the John Byrne run of Superman comics where Kryptonians long-eschewed natural reproduction in favour of Birthing Matrixes along with genetic enhancement and cloning to improve and extend their lives. This was previously seen in adaptations in the DC Extended Universe and the Syfy series Krypton.
- The Kryptonians' depiction as super-powered empire builders seems to draw some inspiration from the Viltrumites from Invincible, who themselves owe some inspiration to the Kryptonians in terms of powers. Culturally, they seem to draw some inspiration from the Asgardians from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, being a formerly imperialistic race of conquerors who moved to a more benevolent mindset.
