My Adventures with Superman Wiki

Jor-El is one of the two posthumous overarching protagonists of My Adventures with Superman.

He was the biological father of Clark Kent/Kal-El and the husband of Lara Lor-Van. His younger brother was Zor-El, and his niece Kara Zor-El. A brilliant scientist and one of the rulers of the Kryptonian Empire. He died with Lara, his wife, in Brainiac's annihilation of Krypton and appeared to Clark in the present day as an A.I.-based hologram.

Well-meaning but easily frustrated, Jor-El is a man who only wants what's best for his son. Although his initial inability to speak English and his refusal to tell the whole truth about the last days of Krypton gets in the way.

Biography[]

As recounted by his AI duplicate, Jor-El was once the Scion of the Kryptonian Empire, a state he eventually came to hold a dim view of, considering it to have spread across the galaxy like a disease. When the Empire found itself in a war with an enemy they "could not defeat", Jor-El led secret peace talks with their adversaries, talks that eventually brokered a ceasefire agreement. Before the ceasefire could be announced, the Empire's Brainiac system, fearing decommissioning if war ended, went rogue. Learning of Brainiac's plan to turn the Empire's greatest weapon against Krypton, Jor-El sent his son off Krypton, advising Zor-El to do the same for his daughter.[1]

Implanting an AI copy of himself into Kal-El's Spacecraft, the copy of Jor-El was activated shortly after Kal's powers first manifested. Unable to speak the Kryptonian tongue, a panicked Kal reburied the spacecraft before the translation program could decipher English.[2]

Over a decade later, Kal, after having used his powers to save his friends, returned to the ship. With a language barrier still existing, Jor-El showed his son images of Krypton's fall and his being sent away, providing him with a set of Kryptonian Armor.[3]

Kal returned not long afterwards, now having adopted the moniker of "Superman", denouncing the Kryptonians for Zero Day and swearing he would defend the Earth against invasion. When the spacecraft detected Kryptonite, its security protocols caused it to rise out of the ground and send out 0MACs to destroy the gem and open a warp gate to the Kryptonian fleet. When Superman planned to turn the ship into a weapon against the invaders, the 0MACs turned on him, Jor-El aiding his son in disabling them as they fought their way to the power core, Superman injecting the Kryptonite into it and shutting down the warp gate. Placing his son into an escape pod, Jor-El, having finally deciphered English, encouraged his son to live.[4]

Jor-El subsequently crashed in Antartica. With the Kryptonite still causing malfunctions, Jor-El was unable to stop Task Force X from entering through the damaged hull before Superman and his friends arrived. With little time left, Jor-El told his son about the Kryptonian Empire, the functional extinction of their people and Kara's presumed survival. When Kal revealed he'd brought his friends with him, Jor-El aided him again in battle, though chiding him for bringing fragile Humans into battle. After disabling Damage, Jor-El merged with the ship's core and teleported it away, leaving behind Task Force X. Fatally damaged from the effort, Jor-El told his son to seek out a communicator beacon to contact Kara before he gave his son a final hug, expressing his pride at the man his son had become.[1]

Personality[]

Jor-El was a once-proud Kryptonian citizen who became disillusioned with the endless wars of the Kryptonian Empire, comparing their destructive nature to a "disease." This led him to send his son, Kal-El, away from the planet's inevitable demise. Ironically, the empire was already in the midst of a centuries-long shift toward a more peaceful and compassionate society. The ultimate paradox is that Jor-El's attempt to organize a ceasefire during their final war—a peaceful act—is what prompted Brainiac to destroy the planet, punishing them for abandoning their imperialist beginnings.

Even in death, Jor-El is a powerful presence in his son's life, offering assistance from beyond the grave. He helped Clark battle Brainiac's forces and, in a critical moment, saved his son from an exploding ship after kryptonite poisoning left Clark unable to escape on his own. Beyond his protective nature, Jor-El possesses a sharp, witty personality. He once sarcastically explained that he couldn't speak English until his translation program finished its work. In another instance, he pointedly remarked that the first time he tried to communicate with Clark, his son's response was to bury him for ten years.

He also had a sharp wit, once chastising Clark for bringing Lois—a powerless human—to a dangerous, drone-filled spaceship. With a dry, sarcastic tone, he pointed out the recklessness of the act, adding that he would have had to perform a grand romantic gesture for his wife, Lara, to make up for a similar mistake. Ultimately, Jor-El was a loving family man who, above all, yearned for his people to move even further away from their violent, imperialist history than they already had.
